Guided tour of the historic center of Bova.

Bova (called Vua, from Βοῦα), located at 820 meters above sea level, is the most important and well-preserved historic center of Greek Calabria and is included among the most beautiful villages in Italy. Bova has always been defined as “the Chora” (ἡ Χώρα) “The country”, having had a great administrative and religious importance since the Byzantine era: formerly a bishopric, district capital and magistrate’s seat, until the beginning of the century the most populous center and heart of Calabrian Greece.

Among the various stories, which have their roots in myth, the best known tells that the sole of a human foot was carved on the rock on which the castle stands: tradition has it that this footprint belongs to a queen (Oichist) came with her people to found the country.

We will accompany you to the Borgo, along the characteristic small stone streets, to visit the Churches, first of all the Cathedral, the Sanctuary of San Leo, the Museums, the ruins of the Norman Castle, the ancient noble palaces. These include Palazzo Tuscano, which houses the headquarters of one of the Visitor Centers of the Aspromonte National Park. Here, you will be able to deepen, through documents, audiovisuals and tools of the peasant tradition, the knowledge of the natural beauties and the historical-cultural heritage of the Aspromonte. A small preview of your journey in the Aspromonte told by Corrado Alvaro in “People in Aspromonte” and on the trail of Edward Lear, the English traveler who in 1847 visited Greek Calabria on the back of a mule (Path of the English).

Transfer to the village of Pentedattilo

Guided visit to the village of Pentedattilo.

Pentedattilo (Pentadattilo in Greek-Calabrian), from the Greek Pentedàktylos, five fingers, a small semi-abandoned village, a true ethno-architectural jewel that maintains its charm unchanged over time. The Borgo, once home to the noble families of the area (the Alberti and the Abenavoli), of which traces of the ancient castle are still present, is today at the center of enhancement projects, organized by the Pro Pentedattiloilo Association, which have led to the recovery of numerous houses used as artistic and craft workshops and, above all, to the realization of social and cultural activities and initiatives of great value such as, for example, the International Civil Service Fields and the Pentedattilo Film Festival. With Peppe Toscano, who will be our Guide, you can relive the history and imagine the future of the small village of Pentedattilo, from the tragedy of the Alberti to today. Maurits Cornelis Escher in 1930 made a lithograph on Pentedattilo.

Gallicianò is perhaps the most authentic village of the Greeks of Calabria, a small enclave that maintains and preserves over time the Greek language, culture, religion, rites, music, traditions and cuisine of the Greeks of Calabria, handed down orally by generation after generation.

We will visit the village in the company of our guide Mimmolino Nucera who will take us to the Orthodox church built in stone, the Old Church and the Museum of Culture and Traditions of the Greeks of Calabria.

Lunch: Greek Taverna.

Lunch at the Taverna Greca will be a party, the party of Greek Calabria for you our guests, a moment of welcome in our way . A succession of peasant dishes cooked according to traditional customs, good Palizzi wine, Greek music and dances animated by the musicians of Gallicianò.

Guided visit to the village of Palizzi.

The village of Palizzi, whose name probably derives from the Byzantine “Politzion”, or “small city” is enchanting, with its settlement that seems chiseled into the rock. From an artistic point of view, Palizzi offers churches of great interest, such as that of S. Anna, with a Byzantine dome or the one built in honor of the Madonna di Carmelo, which is located in the Contrada Carmine and the Castle that dominates the entire settlement. .

Another characteristic of the Borgo di Palizzi are the Catoj , the basement rooms where the farmers kept the barrels of red wine, now known as IGT Rosso di Palizzi, one of the most renowned red wines of Calabrian viticulture. We will have the pleasure of welcoming you to the Catojo of the B&B Alica di Aurelia Tassone to offer you and taste with you a glass of Aranghìa, one of the Palizzi IGT red wines of the Terre Grecaniche Cooperative present in the Slow Wine Guide.
